A fan that speeds up during a game or a Windows update is doing its job. A fan that keeps roaring with only a browser open, or a laptop that shuts down when it gets hot, deserves a closer look.
Check the surface, the workload and the sound
- Use a hard, flat surface. A blanket or sofa can block the air vents. Move the laptop onto a desk, leave space around the vents and see if the noise eases.
- Look at the workload. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If an app is keeping the CPU busy, close it normally and see whether the fan slows down.
- Listen for changes. A steady rush of air often rises with the workload. Grinding, rattling or clicking can point to a fan problem. Make a note of whether it happens under load or even when the laptop is idle.
When does cleaning help?
Dust can restrict airflow through the heatsink even when the outside looks clean. During an inspection, the cooling path and fan can be checked before deciding whether cleaning or another repair is needed. Whether the thermal paste needs replacing depends on what the inspection finds.
If the laptop repeatedly shuts down when hot, pause demanding tasks and have it checked. Let us know whether it happens while charging, gaming, on a call or with nothing much open. That gives us a useful starting point.
If the fan stays loud during light use, tell us the laptop model and when the noise starts. Arrange a cooling system check · See computer cleaning prices
